57: Thirteen
Today I sang the alphabet song in French in front of a room full of eighth graders.
You know when you’re home alone and decide to sing and you pitch it a bit too high for your vocal range? So you start over, on a more comfortable note?
This morning I made the mistake of starting too high, and I have a deep voice, so this is not difficult to do.
I didn’t crack, though. I could feel them watching me, waiting for it.
They still laughed at me, but it’s actually fun to be the corny teacher sometimes.
“ARE Y’ALL READY TO TAKE IT BACK TO KINDERGARTEN?” To my surprise, they all cried “Yeah!”
And when they finished singing - “Maintenant je les connais / Toutes les lettres de l’alphabet” - they laughed and clapped and they were probably a little bit too loud, but this year, I’ve decided not to stress myself out trying to keep a room full of children pin drop quiet when it isn’t absolutely necessary and so I no longer want to cry at the thought of walking into work every morning.
